Location: Teremok, Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, London SE1
• We are pleased to see that the boarded-up shop of Final Clearance fame is now the Teremok European food store, supplying packaged goods and spirits to the Russian community of London. We ask the girl behind the counter how long they’ve been open: two years. We decide to make a £1 purchase. We can’t afford any of the vodka, displayed lovingly on a shelf with fake snow and festive Christmas baubles, so we buy a box of salt. It’s the last one on the shelf. The Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre is a truly international retail experience; we check out the Polish restaurant, the Columbian delicatessen, and the Nigerian phone shop. One of our favourite shops displays a poster illustrating different models of corsetry for men and women. It is the sort of place you’d come to buy a corset (or a yellow kaftan, or, indeed, a box of Russian salt).
